School Feeding Program

Providing nutritious, farm-grown meals to children in rural Sierra Leone.

Our School Feeding Program provides nutritious, locally grown meals to students in nearby primary schools using crops cultivated on GTGR’s demonstration farm. To date, we have donated over 3,000 meals, directly addressing hunger and helping children stay healthy, focused, and in the classroom.

Program Overview

Why This Matters

🍽️ Nutrition & Attendance

School meals reduce hunger, improve focus, and increase daily attendance. When food is available, children are more likely to attend school consistently.

📚 Learning Outcomes

Research in Sierra Leone shows improved performance in English and Mathematics. Students demonstrate higher engagement and attention in the classroom.

🏫 Equity & Girls’ Education

The strongest impacts are seen among girls and children from low-income households. School meals help reduce dropout rates and support long-term learning.

Aligned with National Education & Nutrition Efforts

In Sierra Leone, national school feeding initiatives already reach tens of thousands of children, with plans to expand access nationwide as part of broader efforts to improve nutrition and education. Our work complements these national goals by supporting schools in rural communities where access to consistent meals remains a challenge.

Growing The Grassroots works in coordination with local leadership and education authorities. A partnership has been established with the Bo District Director of the Ministry of Education, aligning our School Feeding Program with district and national priorities for the 2025–2026 education strategy.
