School Field Trip Program
Hands-on agricultural education that grows over time — not just one visit.
The Growing The Grassroots School Field Trip Program brings students from nearby primary and secondary schools to our Tikonko demonstration farm each week for hands-on agricultural education. Rather than one-time visits, participating schools enroll in a 15-week course, allowing students to build knowledge progressively and see farming systems develop over time.
Program Overview
What Students Learn
Soil health, composting, and mulching
Crop selection, planting, and harvesting
Water management and climate awareness
Basic agricultural economics, including costs, income, and profit
Sustainable farming practices relevant to rural Sierra Leone
In Sierra Leone, many students grow up in farming households yet receive little formal agricultural education. This program bridges that gap by showing students how agriculture can be productive, sustainable, and economically viable. By learning on a working farm, students gain practical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a deeper understanding of how food systems support their communities.
Why It Matters
Impact Beyond the Classroom
The School Field Trip Program is designed for long-term impact, not just exposure. Students leave with knowledge they can apply at home, in school gardens, and in future livelihoods. Teachers report increased student engagement, curiosity, and confidence as learners connect academic concepts to real-world outcomes. By investing in agricultural education for children, Growing The Grassroots is helping raise a generation that is better equipped to improve food security, environmental stewardship, and economic opportunity in rural Sierra Leone.
