Who Are the Grassroots?

Growing The Grassroots serves children in low-income rural communities who face persistent food insecurity, irregular school attendance, and limited access to education. Through nutritious school meals and hands-on agricultural learning, we help children stay in school, focus in the classroom, and build skills for the future.

We work alongside women and youth—who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods but lack access to training, tools, and improved farming practices. By strengthening agricultural knowledge and skills, we support families in increasing productivity and long-term resilience.

The Reality in Rural Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone, agriculture is the backbone of the economy, with 60–80% of the rural population depending on small-scale farming. Yet high rates of food insecurity, malnutrition, and low productivity persist due to limited access to education, resources, and training. Nearly three-quarters of rural households report crop production challenges, and many children experience chronic hunger and stunting.

Our Role

Our role is not to replace local knowledge, but to strengthen it. We work alongside communities to provide education, practical tools, and long-term support—helping families and children build more secure futures through agriculture and learning.
